Continuing medical education: Update on newborn infections

Speakers from Norton Children’s Neonatology and the University of Louisville School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics will present the latest recommendations and practice guidelines for common infectious complications affecting newborn infants. Dinner will be served.

This activity is intended for physicians and advanced practice providers in pediatrics, family medicine and neonatology.

Learning objectives

  1. Use the Early-Onset Sepsis (EOS) calculator to determine the risk of sepsis and need for treatment in newborn infants at 34 weeks’ or longer gestation.
  2. Identify which infants are eligible for prophylaxis against influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
  3. Discuss treatment strategies for at-risk populations after diagnosis of influenza and RSV.
  4. Describe the potential sequela and needed follow-up for an infant exposed to herpes simplex virus (HSV) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) during the perinatal period.
  5. Define the management of infants exposed to hepatitis A, B or C during the perinatal period.
