Children’s Oncology Group research and clinical trials

Norton Children’s Cancer Institute is a long-standing member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). COG is the world’s largest group of hospitals treating children with cancer. Our team and COG hospitals across the U.S. follow the same best practices, protocols and treatment regimens for childhood cancer treatment. This means each child has access to the most current clinical trials to improve the cure rate for childhood cancer while decreasing possible longterm effects.

Affiliation with the University of Louisville

Through an affiliation with Norton Children’s Cancer Institute, physicians and advanced practice providers from UofL Physicians – Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders provide care for any pediatric or adolescent oncology and hematology condition. Working together, the group is able to provide initial diagnosis, set a care plan using a variety of treatment options, and manage long-term care and follow-up. The team of medical oncologists works closely with other pediatric specialists, including neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, orthopedic oncologists and others, to provide a team approach to comprehensive care for children from birth to young adulthood.

Norton Children’s Infusion Center

Norton Children’s Infusion Center is an outpatient facility that serves as an extension of our cancer care program.

Norton Children’s Cancer Institute features the region’s only pediatric apheresis and photopheresis program. Apheresis and photopheresis help with the treatment of leukemias and various other blood disorders. These treatments also help patients fight graft-versus-host disease after stem cell transplants, and rejection after organ transplants and other treatments.

Most of these treatments, along with other outpatient care needed in a child’s cancer journey, are provided at Norton Children’s Infusion Center.

Families have access to the following services in a convenient outpatient setting:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Blood transfusions
  • Monthly port access
  • White cell depletion
  • Photopheresis
  • Peripheral stem cell harvesting
