Access within 7 days when you refer to most Norton Children’s employed specialists

Patients have faster access to specialist care, resulting from affiliation between Norton Children’s and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

When the integration between Norton Healthcare, UofL Physicians – Pediatrics and the University of Louisville School of Medicine was finalized in March 2020, an area of focus was to improve access to outpatient care within our specialty practices. After months of optimizing schedules, onboarding new specialists and getting our new practices on Epic, we are excited to offer new seven-day access to our pediatric specialists.

Now, when you make a referral to most Norton Children’s Medical Group employed specialists, the patient will have an encounter within seven business days. An encounter could be the following:

  • Registered nurse triage call with the patient and caregiver
  • Scheduled labs or diagnostic testing
  • Telehealth appointment with a provider
  • Appointment at the practice with a provider

Providers will see patients in the practice within seven days of an urgent medical need as determined through triage.

Referring providers will receive communications regarding their patient progress through treatment plans shared via Epic.

Patients with medical emergencies can continue to be seen at our three pediatric emergency departments — at Norton Children’s Hospital, Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital and Norton Children’s Medical Center.

Commitment to improvement

Norton Children’s goal is for all specialties to have access within seven days.

There continues to be a provider shortage nationally in the areas of sleep medicine; genetics; development; behavioral and mental health; and autism. As we work toward seven-day access for these areas, we are committed to responding promptly to your patients to schedule an appointment.

In addition to using aggressive recruitment strategies to increase the provider workforce in these disciplines, we are committed to the following strategies, all of which will be implemented by the end of the year:

  • Sleep medicine
    • All patients will hear from the practice within two business days to schedule an appointment.
    • Resources will be developed to support patients while they wait for their appointment.
  • Genetics
    • All patients will hear from the practice within two business days to schedule an appointment.
    • Access to genetic counselors will be expanded.
  • Patient navigation program for the Norton Children’s Autism Center, Norton Children’s Behavioral & Mental Health and Norton Children’s Weisskopf Center – Development, all affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine, to include the following strategies:
    • All patients will hear from the practice within two business days to schedule an appointment.
    • Clear referral pathways will be defined.
    • Integrated behavioral and mental health resources will be expanded in the primary care setting.
    • Patient financial counseling will be available.
    • Primary care providers will receive communication about their patient through regular updates on treatment plans
