Norton Leatherman Spine’s leadership on patient-based outcomes featured

The National Spine Health Foundation recently highlighted Steven D. Glassman, M.D., and Norton Leatherman Spine’s leadership in patient-based outcome measures in its “Ask the Expert” video series.

“Historically, whether a patient did well with surgery was determined by, the doctor said you did well or said you didn’t do well,” Dr. Glassman said in the video posted to SpineHealth.org. “Particularly in spine, we’ve really moved to using the patients’ own reports of their improvement in function and their improvement in quality of life as the primary metric of a success of an intervention.”

Dr. Glassman is an orthopedic spine surgeon and medical director of Norton Leatherman Spine.

Spine surgeons in general have been leaders with patient-based outcome metrics. Norton Leatherman Spine and Virginia Spine Institute collaborated on an early way to measure patient outcomes that can be readily understood.

That has led to development of a uniform set of thresholds that allows patients to identify improvements and the amount of change.
