Presenting complaint
Patient presented to the emergency department at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Cave City, Kentucky, with a sudden onset of right-sided weakness and aphasia.
Emergency medical services report
Air Methods KY 3 (of Somerset, Kentucky) was dispatched to T.J. Samson Community Hospital for rapid transport of a patient who was receiving alteplase and needed a higher level of care. The flight crew monitored the alteplase infusion during the 43-minute flight; closely monitored the patient’s vitals and neurological status. Upon landing safely at Norton Brownsboro Hospital, the crew handed off care of the patient to operating room staff.
Outcome
This patient underwent a successful emergency mechanical thrombectomy. Neurosurgeon Shervin R. Dashti M.D., Ph.D., was able to remove a clot from the patient’s left middle cerebral artery; which was the cause of the patient’s stroke symptoms. The cause of the patient’s stroke was cryptogenic. She made a complete recovery and was discharged home four days after her surgery.
