Norton Mobility Lab utilizes GRAIL for gait analysis and training

The new Norton Mobility Lab, located in Norton Medical Plaza 1 on the Norton Healthcare – St. Matthews campus, offers gait analysis and training using the GRAIL system.

Gait Real-time Analysis Interactive Lab (GRAIL) is a versatile, multisensory system which facilitates analysis and training for pediatric and adult patients with impaired walking.

Gait issues may be caused by:

    • Neurological conditions, such as stroke, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, incomplete spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis
    • Musculoskeletal conditions, including amputations, hip or knee replacement, or leg fractures
    • Generalized frailty in elderly patients

Norton Mobility Lab is the only facility in Kentucky with GRAIL gait analysis. Benefits of GRAIL:

  • It offers rehabilitation through evaluation and/or treatment, and includes single or combined visual, auditory, vestibular and tactile sensory inputs.
  • The dual-belt treadmill with virtual-reality environments projected on a screen allows therapists to measure and analyze a patient’s walking pattern in just a few minutes.
  • Real-time data processing and virtual images challenge patients with mechanical, visual and cognitive tasks in a controlled environment.
  • GRAIL is equipped with an integrated motion capture system, three video cameras and a noninvasive electromyography (EMG) system.

Norton Mobility Lab is staffed by specially trained pediatric and adult physical therapists and an exercise physiologist. The lab allows for collaboration between physicians and therapists to assist in determining the best plan of care for patients, including surgical needs, orthotics, prosthetics and more.
