If a child you are treating has severe asthma symptoms, evidenced by several emergency department visits or admission to intensive care even though receiving treatment, consider referring the patient to Norton Children’s Pulmonology, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine. At the Severe Asthma Clinic, specialists from Norton Children’s Pulmonology and Norton Children’s Allergy & Immunology, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine, along with a team of advanced practice providers, therapists, nurses and other health care professionals, evaluate the patient in a multidisciplinary setting.
The goal of the Norton Children’s Severe Asthma Clinic is to address the causes of the patient’s severe asthma as well as help children and families, through the use of comprehensive therapeutic strategies, to:
- Maintain healthy breathing
- Identify asthma triggers that children may be to avoid
- Optimize allergy care
- Prevent chronic symptoms and asthma attacks
- Limit trips to the emergency room
- Recognize symptoms of unstable or uncontrolled asthma through asthma education and an asthma action plan
- Live as worry-free as possible, including maintaining normal physical activities
