At the Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute, we help children with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and their families through all phases of their diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care. Our goal is to provide a personalized management plan, helping families achieve better blood sugar control and live healthier, more active lives.
With the opening of the state-of-the-art Novak Center for Children’s Health, funded in part by a generous gift from the Lift a Life Foundation, our skilled team is committed to providing diabetes care in one of the largest and most technically advanced pediatric outpatient centers in the country. We provide information and guidance to the entire family, because a child’s illness affects everyone.
Statistics
More than 130 children are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in our community each year. Since its founding in 2013, the Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute has continued to improve services for a growing number of families.
- We currently care for more than 1,540 children with Type 1 diabetes.
- We have nearly 5,000 annual office and hospital care visits.
- Nearly half of those visits require admission to the “Just for Kids” Critical Care Center at Norton Children’s Hospital.
- Since 2008, Norton Children’s Hospital has experienced a 20 percent increase in hospital admissions due to Type 1 diabetes.
The Wendy Novak Diabetes Institute at Norton Children’s Hospital and University of Louisville was recently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 50 Best Hospitals for Pediatric Diabetes & Endocrinology services in the United States.

Our vision of being nationally recognized as a diabetes center of excellence is not possible without our research innovation mission. We collaborate with the University of Louisville and community, national and international diabetes researchers.
